PlayStation 4 Preview

In the last generation, Microsoft and its Xbox 360 was king of the hill for a good long while. This streak, however, came to an abrupt end after the original unveiling of the Xbox One was met with harsh criticism about the system being way too closed off and way too focused on all things TV in addition to being underwhelmingly underpowered. This led Sony to use the public outcry to their benefit and as a result, the PlayStation 4 eclipsed the Xbox One's sales numbers. Sony has now announced that the popular console has surpassed 50 million units sold to consumers worldwide as of December 6, spread out over the 122 countries and regions that are currently selling the device.

We're truly delighted that the PS4 community continues to flourish since launch three years ago.

With tremendous support from our fans and partners across the globe, this year we were able to deliver an unprecedented lineup of hardware, including the new slimmer PS4, PS4 Pro and PlayStation VR. We will continue to provide the best gaming experiences available through our ground-breaking software lineup and network services, as we focus on accelerating our business and expanding the PS4 ecosystem.

- Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment

In a press release released by Sony, the Japanese multimedia conglomerate talks about their successes in the first few years of this console generation, saying that this year's American Consumerist Battle Royale (also known as Black Friday) was the best Black Friday for the PlayStation 4. Note that these numbers include the regular PlayStation 4 as well as the recently released PlayStation 4 Pro.

In terms of software sales, Sony's got a lot to be proud of there as well:

With a vast array of exciting software titles from 3rd party developers and publishers as well as from SIE Worldwide Studios (SIE WWS), PS4 software sales also remain strong, with more than 369.6 million copies*3 sold in retail stores globally and through digital downloads on PlayStation®Store as of December 4, 2016.
Last week's PlayStation Experience also announced a ton of new stuff coming to their console next year, including new story DLC for Uncharted, the long-awaited remaster for Crash Bandicoot and a whole bunch of new trailers for new entries in older franchises, or for completely new IP. I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
