The PlayStation 4 is still killing it this generation. Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) revealed that the console has hit 91.6 million units worldwide as of December 31st last year. 5.6 million of those units were in the holiday season alone.

On top of this, over 50.7 million PS4 games had sold during the holiday season. This number contributes to the now 876 million games sold in total. Marvel’s Spider-Man sold-through over 9 million copies as of November 25th, 2018 as well.

John Kodera, President, and CEO of SIE commented on these statistics:

"Thanks to the continued support from our fans during the holiday season, we are pleased to announce that PS4 has reached 91.6 million units globally. We are also happy to announce that the monthly active users of PlayStation Network continues to show strong growth, and has surpassed 90 million as of end of November 2018. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones. This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world."
This news is continually surprising considering the Xbox 360 was the primary console of choice last generation. The two have flipped flopped with the release of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. While Phil Spencer has slowly been turning Xbox around, Sony has been killing it with exclusives. More games are coming too, like The Last of Us Part 2, Death Stranding, and Ghost of Tsushima. Hopefully, they can keep the momentum coming into the rumored next generation.

In other news, next gen is looking even more exciting with some recent developments. We learned that Bungie is splitting from Activision and will retain full rights to the Destiny franchise. We won't be seeing the next title for a while. However, we can hope for a return to form from the once great Halo developers.
