Today, Bluehole Inc., has announced that their title PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS (PUBG) has hit the ten million unit sold mark as of September 1st since their Steam Early Access launch on March 23, 2017. Five months and nine days. For even more math, that's approximately 61,728 units sold per day, or 1,851,851 units sold per month.

During this time, PUBG has hit a peak concurrent users mark 937,000 during the PUBG Invitational at Gamescom 2017. During this four day event:

  • 92 players from 19 different countries globally competed in four different PUBG game modes (solo, duo, duo-fpp, squad)
  • PUBG Invitational was officially broadcast across nine streaming platforms including Mixer, Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, PandaTV, AfreecaTV, Kakao TV, Naver and Openrec
  • Peak online viewership on Twitch official channels was 536,000 on first day (solo mode)
  • Peak online viewership on PandaTV official channels was 5.6 million on first day (solo mode)
Bluehole Inc. notes that the charity donation pledge is being finalized, with "an announcement coming soon."
It is amazing and gratifying to see the love and support the passionate fans have shown to PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS,” stated Chang Han Kim, Vice President and Executive Producer for Bluehole. “Watching the thrilling moments during the PUBG Invitational with the great feedback from viewers is a realization of the continuing popularity of PUBG and our team is working diligently to bring a solid gameplay experience for full launch on the PC and Xbox One Game Preview versions later this year.

Quick Take:

PUBG is a great example of a "perfect storm," whereupon all the right conditions were met for PUBG to become an overnight success. I cannot say Bluehole hasn't earned these sales, but I do hope that they continue updating the game and not slacken with the updates, as there is so much potential with this title it would be tragic to see it go to waste.
