Planetside 2 - preview

PlanetSide 2, a popular mmofps, has just received an update allowing for base building. Normally in PlanetSide 2, there are set continents and set bases but with this change to the game there is a lot more diversity in the kinds of battles to be had. PlanetSide 2 is a game developed by Daybreak Games and currently available on either the PC or PlayStation 4.

In order to create your own base, you need to first call in an Advanced Nanite Transport, otherwise known as an ANT. This four man vehicle is able to harvest nodes from around each continent for building materials. Once in the ANT, you're able to access the construction menus that allow you to build features or artillery. While a lot of these features are free, there are other structures that are locked away until purchase such as one-way shields, anti-bombardment shields and more.

On top of the base building, there is also the HIVEs, that when you kill them they reward you with victory points. If they are near warp gates then you will be able to gain more victory points from them. These HIVEs are able to be set up by either you or enemy factions.

PlanetSide 2 is available to play for free on PC through its own Daybreak client, Steam, or on PlayStation 4.

Quick Take

This is a fun thing to see, a mmofps that has been turned on its head by the ability to build up bases throughout the world. Normally when games are build they stick to their core concepts but when so much work has been put into building the multiple continents some fresh action can be brought to the world through random player bases that can now be built up through the world.

What do you think of Daybreak allowing players to build their own bases? Do you think this adds to the experience or hinders it? Let us know in the comments below.
