Bad boys bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? Apparently, get an upgrade if you’re on an eligible device. Windows users who chose to sail the 7 seas for their copy of Windows may be able to upgrade that non-genuine Windows 7/8 to a genuine Windows 10.

There has been buzz online about this and upon further investigation, it doesn’t seem to be limited to the Chinese market as speculated by an article from Reuters. According to another article from VentureBeat, this applies worldwide. Back in January, Microsoft has announced that current users of Windows 7 , Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1  would be able to jump straight to Windows 10 as a free upgrade within the allotted year timespan.

Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows,” a Microsoft spokesperson told VentureBeat. “We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows, and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies.

In China, 1 out of every 10 copies of Windows is bought legitimately, it’s no surprise there was speculation on why this may have been a Chinese only ordeal. Another factor to take into consideration is you may not be aware if you have an illegitimate copy of Windows. Not everyone builds their own system to know what went into their PC or purchases one from an OEM that has a deal with Microsoft. All it takes is buying a new computer from a local shop trying to save a few bucks. Microsoft values the concept of geniune Windows and it’s a nice gesture that even pirates are invited to the party. Yes, you could even pirate Windows right now on an eligible device and be able to upgrade to Windows 10. Now that is taking generosity to another level.

Pirates are going to deactivate activation regardless, but it’s the end-user that’s taking the risk when they torrent a copy. With all sorts of shady stuff hidden within software, Microsoft would rather all Windows 7 users on up get a free upgrade to Windows 10 than having the newest operating system pirated. There will always be pirated Windows, but it’s nice having a more legitimate option available.

Redmond’s new operating system will come to retail this summer and will be available in 190 countries and 111 different languages. Pair this with Project Spartan and a unified ecosystem, you have the potential makings of the total package. With all this free upgrading, Windows 10 is bound to capture a decent market share. It’s unclear what these qualifications are exactly for eligible devices, but we’ll keep you posted.

Would you take Microsoft up on their offer or would you rather do a clean install? We’d like to know!
