Persona 5 Live-Stream Announcements and More

Atlus held a 24-hour livestream on NicoNico on July 19th promoting the upcoming release of JRPG Persona 5. During the stream gameplay for the title was shown revealing some interesting details about the next entry in the Persona series. The stream was a countdown to a premium event where 7 new announcements about the game were made.

Persona 5 follows a 16-year-old protagonist with a criminal history. A group of 5 characters form the “Phantom Thieves of Hearts” and attempt to steal hidden treasures. These treasures are meant to help reform the distorted minds of adults. A greater enemy the teenagers will have to overcome will be revealed as they delve deeper into the world.

Gameplay footage of Persona 5 reveals many details including skills used in the game, a fishing mini-game and a movie date with character Futaba Sakura. The footage also revealed how to select the hero’s name. After being arrested the protagonist is asked to write down his name and during this time players may enter their desired moniker.

A new feature called “Mementos” was also revealed during the broadcast. Mementos is a free roam, randomly generated dungeon where players can explore and complete various quests. This unique dungeon will have players roaming around with cat character Morgana who has the zany ability to turn into a bus. Players can spend a fair amount of time exploring Mementos as it’s around the size of the entirety of Persona 4's playable areas.

After the 24 hour live-stream, Atlus held a premium event, also broadcast on Niconico, to make seven new announcements about Persona 5. Held at the Tokyo National Museum, seven characters from the game were revealed during the event. A trailer for each was released showcasing the following characters: Hifumi Togo, Shinya Oda,Yuki Mishima,Sadayo Kawakami,Ichiko Oya,Chihaya Mifune and Toranosuke Yoshida.

It was also recently announced that Atlus would be collaborating with AKG to create special edition wireless headphones. Called the P5 Fukaba Sakura Edition, the special headphones are a version of the AKG K 845BT Wireless Headphones that character Fukaba Sakura from Persona 5 likes to use. Costing 39,800 Yen and available in the Atlus D-Shop the headphones will include replacement ear pads, “P5 Single Remix for AKG” Shoji Meguro and Ryota Koduka two-track remix CD and special box art and tapestry by artist Shigenori Soejima in addition to the headphones themselves.

More Persona content has also been announced for the franchise. An anime called Persona 5 The Animation: The Daybreakers was announced with a trailer and release date of September 3rd in Japan. On September 15th a web manga for Persona 5 will be published. A concert of the game’s soundtrack will be held on November 27th in Tokyo as well.

Persona 5 will be released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on September 15, 2016 in Japan. It will come to North America on February 14, 2017. A launch event for the game will be held at Tokyo Game Show on September 15th and the game will be playable at select locations around Japan throughout the rest of the summer.
