Owing to an announcement from Polish studio Forever Entertainment, Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei are getting remakes. Simply titled Panzer Dragoon: Remake and Panzer Dragoon II Zwei: Remake, the first of these re-releases is slated to be out "before the end of 2019." Both games were originally released on the Sega Saturn in 1995 and 1996, and barring the addition of Orta to Xbox One's backward compatibility earlier this year, little news has been heard about Panzer Dragoon in decades. Forever Entertainment has nothing to show off at this time concerning the remakes, only saying that materials "would be coming in the next few months."

Composed of a series of short, on-rails shooting levels, the early Panzer Dragoon games were lauded for their stellar soundtrack, groundbreaking graphics, and approachable gameplay. Set in a fantasy realm, all of the games have seen unlikely heroes bond with dragons as they attempt to avert the apocalypse. In the first Panzer Dragoon, hunter Keil Fluge witnesses a fight between two dragons and their riders. When one of the riders is mortally wounded, the dragon is entrusted to Keil, who is then tasked with preventing an ancient ruin from activating.

Panzer Dragoon II Zwei would come out a year later, and act as a prequel to the first game. Now commanding Jean-Luc Lundi, he finds a wounded dragon, but instead of killing it, as tradition demands, Jean-Luc instead befriends it and sets off in order to avenge his family and village. Both games make use of only a limited number of armaments: the free-aim of the rider's sidearm, and the homing laser of your dragon compatriot. According to Gematsu, the remake will update the graphics and gameplay, "making it attractive to modern players while remaining faithful to the original...story."

Polish publisher Forever Entertainment has been previously known for developing and marketing indie games. The highest-profile release so far was Fear Effect: Sedna which resurrected the Fear Effect franchise via a successful Kickstarter, even if the final product ended up in a less than stellar state. If you're worried about the end product of these remakes, fear not, as Forever Entertainment is working with Sega of Japan as "co-creators" on the project. Hopefully, we get to see the Panzer Dragoon remakes in action before long.
