The New York Excelsior will be representing the Empire State in the Overwatch League, a professional competitive gaming league for Blizzard's first-person shooter Overwatch. The announcement was made via the league's official website.
"Excelsior" is Latin for "ever upward" and represents the lofty ambitions of the New York team for the Overwatch League. The Excelsior also go by the shorter nickname "NYXL". The team is owned by Sterling VC, a venture capital fund that is also the owner of the New York Mets baseball team. As with many teams, the NYXL have released a promotional video kicking off the announcement of their team:

Every team in the Overwatch League is getting repped by a hero with a special cosmetic skin and the NYXL is no different - the Excelsior colors of blue and red are donned by Lúcio. The hero lives in Brazil but is also a smash music sensation that travels the world playing his music (and occasionally booping the bad guys). This team is the first professional e-sports team that is representing the state of New York. Much like other professional sports, most of the team's roster is from out of town.
If you'd like to keep up with the New York Excelsior, you can follow them on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch. You can also head on over to the official website of the NYXL. The Overwatch League starts its preseason on December 6, 2017. The inaugural season of the league begins on January 10, 2018.
