Blizzard Entertainment has put out a pair of announcements regarding its professional league for Overwatch esports - Overwatch League skins will be available for purchase in early 2018 and real-life merchandise will be added to the Blizzard Gear Store tomorrow.

The Overwatch League initially showcased their team reveals with a single custom skin representing a specific character. Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer has now revealed that the team skin treatment has been extended to every single one of the game's 26 characters in a fashion similar to the skins shown during the Overwatch World Cup. These Overwatch League skins won't just be available to the team's players, either - fans of the team will be able to purchase the skins and support the respective teams monetarily.

This system will be backed by the introduction of a new currency called League Tokens. League Tokens will be used exclusively for in-game content related to the league. This separate currency exists mainly to ensure that purchases made by players are properly accounted for so that the 12 teams in the league can receive a payout based on these purchases. All current Overwatch players will receive enough tokens to purchase a single skin when the system deploys in early 2018. Although the general framework of the system has been announced, Blizzard hasn't yet mentioned the cost of League Tokens or how many tokens it will take to purchase a single skin, nor how the split will work.

If you're out to rep your regional team, you'll be able to do so in the real world before you get the chance in-game. League merch will be making its way to the Blizzard Gear Store on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at 1:00 PM Eastern Time. Merch for the league itself as well as the individual teams will be available including shirts, jackets, and hats. There's been no mention of a revenue share on this front as with the in-game skins, but considering how Blizzard is modeling the league after professional sports leagues, it's reasonable to assume that they'll be following suit in some fashion.

The Overwatch League begins its preseason on December 6, 2017, at 10:00 PM Eastern Time. The inaugural season will commence on January 10, 2018.

What do you think of the possibility of buying Overwatch League skins to support your favorite team in the Overwatch League? How do you feel Blizzard's system stacks up against similar systems to support people & teams in other games such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive? Let us know in the comments below!
