Overwatch will be having a weekend event where players will earn double experience according to a news post on the game's official website.

It's down to the last few days of the Overwatch Anniversary event, and players will have the opportunity to earn double experience over the weekend on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The double XP weekend is being touted as a way to thank the players for their support in the first year of the game's release.

Nearly all sources of experience will be affected by the multiplier during the course of the event. Time spent in a match, winning a match, backfilling a match, medal bonuses, and victory bonuses are given as examples where the bonus applies. The sole exception is the 1500 XP "First Win of the Day" bonus which is excluded from the multiplier. Additionally, any experience-boosting bonuses (such as the +20% bonus for being in a group) will stack multiplicatively. Bonuses for winning or playing a consecutive match are relatively small (in the low hundreds), so making the most of out the event will more or less depend on how much time you spend playing.

The weekend event begins on Thursday, June 8th at 8:00 PM Eastern time (Friday, June 9 at 00:00 UTC) and ends on Tuesday, June 13th at 2:59 AM Eastern Time (Tuesday, June 13 at 06:59 UTC). Blizz advises players to use a site like thetimezoneconverter.com to figure out the exact start and end times for their region.

Quick Take

Nice to see Blizz finally doing a Double XP weekend. The 20% group bonus being affected by the multiplier means we're probably going to see a lot more groups playing during this period. Even so, this is just a band-aid on the game's terribly designed loot system, and I hope that they have reasonable fixes underway in the near future.

What do you think of Overwatch running a weekend event where players can earn double experience? Do you think Blizzard Entertainment should close out all of this game's events in a similar fashion? How do you feel the rate of earning experience (and loot boxes) is calibrated in the game today? Let us know in the comments below!
