The development team of Overwatch is working on integrating character biographies and lore into the game according to a post by Lead Writer Michael Chu on the game’s official forums.
The announcement that this feature was in development came as a response to a request from a player on the Overwatch General Discussion board. This particular request has been made multiple times on the game’s official forums, Twitter, and on the /r/Overwatch subreddit since the release of the game. Lead Writer Michael Chu had this to say in response to the request:
We’re actively working on getting character biographies and story information displayed in-game. We have some different ideas about how to do this, and you’ll probably see the results rolling out little by little in future patches. Ideally, we’d love for you to be able to get most of this information in the game, so it’s something we’ll continue to work towards.
Overwatch has quite a lot of backstory to it in various different mediums. The game’s official website lists heroes and their abilities along with short biographies, ten comics (starting with McCree and each spotlighting one character), and a half-dozen animated shorts on the official YouTube channel. The game’s story is also revealed through the maps and character voice lines throughout the game. Hanamura, for example, shows the after effects of the battle between Hanzo and Genji in the Animated Short Dragons, and the Numbani map was recently updated to show the aftermath of a battle that took place in the airport terminal.
Console players, in particular, will be able to have easier access to the story elements of the game while they’re waiting for a match to begin as it’s a bit more involved to pop open a web browser while a game is currently running on a console. In any case, some kind of in-game representation of the lore should give players something extra to do besides spamming voice lines and trashing the spawn room.
What do you think of Overwatch adding character biographies and lore into the game? Do you think this will be a nice touch to round out the story elements of the game or do you feel that development time for this feature is better spent elsewhere? Do you think you should be able to view animated shorts and comics in-game as well? Let us know in the comments below!More About This Game
