OUYA Announces All Access Yearly Subscription

The Ouya

OUYA wasn't as well received as the initial hype surrounding the console made it out to be. A large library of games to be sure, but the majority of which could be played on smartphones, and better too as OUYA's hardware certainly left much to be desired. OUYA recently announced a new "All Access" style yearly subscription service which unlocks, mostly, all games in the OUYA library. For $60 a year you can play every game there is on the device. This is welcome news after last March when the OUYA team announced games would no longer require games to have a free to play feature, which was arguably the consoles front and center advantage, to be on the device.

The catch to all this is that the pass merely unlocks all $30 and under purchases. So full games and level add ons but not other secondary purchases such as extra lives or power ups. Anything that is designed to "enhance gameplay" will still need to be purchased. It will be interesting to see which companies think what falls under these categories.

OUYA also mentioned this subscription is more of a test for an "official subscription" that may come later. In a statement sent to Ars Technica, OUYA stated, "For the price of one console game, players receive access to the entire OUYA catalog of more than 800 titles for a full year. It's just one of many things we're exploring to give players the best value and developers the best visibility. Results of this test will dictate if/how we proceed with an official subscription program."
