Outer Wilds Landing On Epic Games Store And Xbox One On May 30

Mobius Digital's upcoming open-world mystery adventure Outer Wilds was first announced in 2015. That same year, it also won on the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and Excellence in Design categories at the 2015 GDC Independent Games Festival. It was also the first game to be featured in the video game crowdfunding platform Fig, achieving its $125,000 goal within schedule. The developer then made a deal with publisher Annapurna Interactive, and in December last year, we reported that the game had been delayed to 2019.

Last Friday, in their latest Fig update, the developers announced that Outer Wilds will first be released on Xbox One and PC via the Epic Games Store, joining the growing list of games that cut a deal with Epic Games to launch as timed exclusives on their budding storefront, among them Metro ExodusSpellbreakClose to the SunThe Sinking CityThe Outer WorldsControlAnno 1800Observation, and Borderlands 3. Reportedly, most of these deals were agreed upon as timed exclusives, meaning that they will likely come to other digital distribution platforms later, as Mobius Digital is quick to assure their backers.

The developers say they've "welcomed helpful partnerships with Annapurna Interactive, Xbox, and Epic" to support the development of the game, but they also appreciate the fans and backers for all their support and hope to share an update on a release date for the game soon.

Quick Take

It's nice to see a proper gameplay trailer for Outer Wilds, and I really like the game's atmosphere and art direction. It feels kind of like a Subnautica set in a weird space setting, but more story-heavy, with dialogues and all that. Looking forward to seeing more of it.
