Square Enix's Octopath Traveler, the Nintendo Switch exclusive developed in-house by Square and studio Acquire, has shipped over 1 million copies worldwide.

The announcement comes from the official Octopath PR Twitter account, stating that world shipping and downloadable numbers have netted over a million copies sold. The account also features some new artwork of the characters carrying a "1,000,000 thanks" banner.

Many eagle-eyed fans pointed out that the positioning of the banner and the characters alluded to the official artwork of Bravely Default for the Nintendo 3DSwhich the producers of Octopath Traveler,  Tomoya Asano, and Masashi Takahashi both worked on as well.

The official Box Art, it does look similar, doesn't it?

Octopath Traveler has become massively successful for Square Enix. It was reported that the game shipped over 90% of its initial stock in Japan in late July, with over 100,000 units sold in less than two weeks. The game has had several reported sellouts of the physical copy of the game, especially in Japan, at one point selling hundreds of copies in only three hours after a new batch was released. Square Enix has apologized for the shortages, encouraging players to download the game on the Nintendo E-shop if they can.

The game itself is a throwback to classic console RPGs, featuring eight distinct characters and eight separate stories to go through. Some of the modern twists include a revamp of the turn-based mechanics and the use of animated sprites in an HD environment, creating what the developers have dubbed an "HD-2D" effect. Our own review of the game can be read here.

Octopath Traveler is exclusively on the Nintendo Switch and is available now.
