Yesterday NVIDIA released a driver update for their graphics cards in order to get ready for the release of Tom Clancy's The Division. This update is numbered 364.47 but as soon as the update was downloaded many users were reporting all kinds of adverse effects including BSOD, inability to boot to windows, and all kinds of other video related issues. After some hiccups on diagnosing the issue (originally they told users it was due to multiple monitors setups which appears to be incorrect and they moved away from) NVIDIA has released a beta driver numbered 364.51 that seems to be resolving issues for people.

Depending on what situation you're in there are a number of different things that you can do:

Best case scenario is that you never updated to 364.47 in the first place and you can do one of two things from here. If you really want to play The Division with the best performance then you can download the Beta GeForce Game Ready Driver. If you have no particular desire to play The Division, or get the stability fixes for Need for Speed then you can pass on it for the time being.

Worst case scenario on the other hand is if you've updated to 364.47 and are having the issues described above. nVidia has told users to start their computers in Safe Mode and either use a tool like Display Driver Uninstaller to remove version 364.47 and either install your previous firmware or follow the above link to download the Beta version of the driver.

Quick Take

An issue like this is worrying, especially an update paired with the release of an AAA game, that drivers are crashing left right and center. What makes matters worse is that The Division was bundled with some NVIDIA cards too. With the wide number of cards being affected it seems weird that this also wasn't caught earlier. The really fantastic part of this though is that they were able to get onto a quick fix so quickly so that fans can get back to playing The Division.

What do you think of the launch of driver firmware that has crashed people's computers? Are you glad that a fix has come around the corner so quickly? Did you encounter any of these issues?
