Today, Shiro Games, the developer of Northgard, have released their Niddhogg: The Clan of the Dragon DLC on Steam, its second DLC release since its Early Access launch on February 22, 2017.

The Clan of the Dragon are the last that still focus on slavery and sacrifice to further their goals. They start a game with a Sacrificial Pyre, which allows players to sacrifice a unit in order to earn Dragon Essence. Once enough sacrifices have been made, the player will be able to progressively unlock bonuses for their economy and army. Dragon Essence can also be used at the Dragonkin Altar--the Clan's only military building-- to transform villagers into Dragonkins, which are stronger than regular Warriors and gain a +50% bonus attack power when fighting alone once Frenzy Knowledge has been researched.

In order to manage The Clan of the Dragon's economy, players will have to utilize Thralls--basically villagers at a lower cost--which can travel into neutral territory and act as cheap warriors. The player can also use them to capture neutral or enemy civilians and put them to work on their own production buildings.

Quick Take:

Northgard had a pretty rough Early Access launch, but since then I've heard nothing but good things. I'll probably have to give it another shot over the holidays since I really liked what I saw the first go-around. I also found that Northgard's unique (at least unique in that I haven't seen it anywhere else) crossover between Civilization and Age of Empires is a really good idea that I could easily see being replicated eventually.

What do you think of Northgard and its DLCs? Have you played it? What do you think of the current state of the RTS genre? Let us know in the comments!
