Miitomo, Nintendo’s take on social media for mobile devices, will be shutting down on May 5, 2018, as reported by Nintendo Everything.

Nintendo had tried their hand at the social media game with Miitomo, a social-networking app that made use of the Japanese-based company’s “Mii” avatars originally introduced with the Wii console. Users could create their Mii by hand or download it from an existing My Nintendo account. You could dress up your Mii, visit friends, and answer questions on a variety of topics (even choosing to restrict some questions to friends-only). Users could also take “MiiFotos” with their in-game avatar and share them with friends or post them online. Completing activities in the app would award coins that would let you unlock more clothing options, and users also had the option to toss in some real-world currency to trick out their avatar with some stylish duds.

As interesting as Nintendo’s take on social media may have been, all things must eventually come to an end. As of today, you will no longer be able to purchase Miitomo coins in the app. Nintendo plans on making Miitomo coins and game tickets available as a login bonus so players can enjoy the content until everything eventually shuts down. The game last received a major update in February of 2017, so things have been winding down for some time now.

You can check out Nintendo’s announcement about the service’s closure (in Japanese) here. If you haven’t yet taken the app for a whirl, you can get it for Android via the Play Store and for iOS via iTunes. You can also swing by the app’s official website. Miitomo will close down for good on May 5, 2018, at 3:00 PM Eastern Time.

What did you think of Miitomo? Do you think Nintendo did a good job in their foray into social media apps? What would you have liked to see them do differently? Let us know in the comments below!
