First held in 1990, the Nintendo World Championship pit enthusiastic gamers against each other in a competition featuring some of Nintendo's most popular franchises. The games were taken from the Nintendo World Championships cartridge, one of the rarest NES games in existence, with only ninety gray copies nintendo world championship cartridgeawarded to finalists and twenty-six gold copies given out in a Nintendo Power promotion. Recent sales of the game have brought in upwards of $11,000. The Nintendo World Championship itself was based on the film The Wizard (1989) which featured a fictional tournament and served as the reveal of Super Mario Bros. 3.

The upcoming Championship, like the original, will feature only three Nintendo games. The 1990 Championship featured Rad Racer, Super Mario Bros., and Tetris. The upcoming Championship will also feature Super Mario Bros., as well as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Dr. Mario. To help competitors prepare, Nintendo released the Ultimate NES Remix so players could hone their skills for the competition. Anyone wishing to compete would have to attend a qualifying tournament in one of eight Best Buy locations in the United States:

1717 Harrison St. San Francisco, CA

3675 Pacific Coast Highway Torrance, CA

10760 NW 17th St. Miami, FL

Players will have to make sure they get there early to get in, as only the first 750 people at each Best Buy will get a wristband, and anyone after that first batch will only be allowed to compete at Nintendo's discretion.

This announcement was part of a massive information released by Nintendo, as they prepare for E3.
