A new report by games industry analyst SuperData states that the Nintendo Switch has managed to sell 1.5 million units worldwide since the release of Nintendo's new handheld hybrid on March 3. The report uses data gathered from Japanese gaming website Famitsu and market researcher GfK.

The report by SuperData (transcribed in part by Gamesindustry.biz) says that Nintendo has managed to shift half a million units in the US alone, with the system moving 360,000 units since its release. According to the report, Europe isn't very far behind the US and Japan in terms of sales. While these numbers only include the first week of sales, the number will most definitely be higher by now. Whatever the case, it seems like Nintendo's 2 million units sold by the end of March is very doable based on the Switch's performance in its first week.

According to SuperData's report, 89% of Switch owners also grabbed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to play with their new console, leading to 1.34 million sales for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which is also available on the Wii U. While the game's sales are more than respectable, it's anyone's guess when sales of the few games available for the Switch right now dry up. Nintendo, however, seems positive about the Switch's prospects due to the first-party support, with multiple well-known franchises set to make their debut on the Nintendo Switch at some point this year, including a new Mario and the release of an improved version of Mario Kart 8.

Quick Take

Nintendo has successfully made their first moves with the Switch, and it's paying off. While the platform has some glaring issues, both critics and fans have responded positively to the SwitchGood for them!

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
