Recently, Nintendo Japan has released the file sizes for a few of their upcoming Nintendo Switch eShop titles, although perhaps the most noticeable addition is the fact that Dragon Quest Heroes I.II requires an SD card.

Overall, just over a half-dozen file sizes for the soon-to-be Switch titles were released. For those that are curious, here is the list:

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (13.4 GB)
  2. Puyo Puyo Tetris (1.09 GB)
  3. I Am Setsuna (1.40 GB)
  4. Nobunaga’s Ambition (5 GB)
  5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (7 GB)
  6. Snipperclips (1.60 GB)
  7. Dragon Quest Heroes I·II (32 GB, SD card required)
  8. Makai Senki Disgaea 5 (5.92 GB)
Just from glancing at this list, it looks like those who are set on purchasing a Nintendo Switch will have to buy an SD card as well if they are planning on buying more than a half-dozen games on Nintendo's eShop, which is something that is not unexpected, but not a pleasant surprise either. It is also worth noting that unlike other consoles, the Nintendo Switch does not require you to install physical copies of games from disk.

Quick Take:

What's ironic about this is that Nintendo seems to take a perverse pleasure in taking one step forward and then another step back, and the system hasn't even been released yet. While releasing a system with 32 GB of file space may have sufficed back in 2006, forcing users to swallow an additional cost that could easily add another $200 to a prospective buyers' purchase shows a callous disregard that could have been easily remedied. By doing this, Nintendo is placing a limit on the number of games that users can have on their system at any given time, which will only serve to disenfranchise the hardcore base that Nintendo desperately needs. Hopefully, Nintendo realizes this and releases a system with a decent file size, but that won't be much help for those that have already pre-ordered or are going to purchase a system. Seriously, Nintendo. We want to love you again, but you have to stop making boneheaded decisions like this. We can only wait for so long, and your continuing irrelevance will see you in the same company as Sega if you don't get your act together sooner rather than later.
