Nintendo has released version 3.1.0 of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. In addition to a new VR mode we previously covered, there are a lot of re-balancing changes in the patch.
There are so many changes, it should also be listed what hasn’t changed. The following characters do not have any mention in the release notes: Mario, Link, Yoshi, Kirby, Bowser, Sheik, Zelda, Dr. Mario, Falco, Marth, Young Link, Mewtwo, Chrom, Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Ike, Lucas, Sonic, King Dedede, Mega Man, Greninja, Mii Swordfighter, Palutena, Robin, Duck Hunt, Corrin, Ridley, Simon, and Richter.
However, all characters in the game have a change to their wall jumping. “After wall jumping, you’ll now need to wait longer before wall jumping in the same direction again.”
One of the most significant changes is to Pichu. Pichu was often at the top of tier lists, but now they’ve made him easier to hit. His hitbox has been enlarged significantly, and most attacks will now do extra damage to Pichu itself.
Another character that was at the top of tier lists was Peach and her echo fighter Daisy. They’ve been toned down somewhat, with their forward air attacks having a shorter launch distance and an increased vulnerability period after using the side and down specials. However, Nintendo did make it easier to land a second and subsequent hits on their neutral attacks.
Like Pichu, the small character Olimar from Pikmin now has a larger hitbox, making him easier to hit. He also has a longer period of vulnerability when using his up and side smashes, and his up special has “Adjusted the flight time when the move is used repeatedly.”, which will make recovery more difficult.
Captain Falcon also sees some significant changes, notably his side tilt and back air having an extended launch difference. Falcon Kick now has a longer hit detection window in both the air and on the ground. Forward air also has an increased damage range.
Nintendo has released a full changelist here, and the update is available now.
