Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild

Nintendo has given a quick trailer showing off the stunning new Legend of Zelda game, titled Breath of the Wild, today at E3.

Posted online, the three-minute trailer shows Link roaming a gorgeous landscape, fighting moblins, rock creatures, swimming and rock climbing in full, cel-shaded graphics.

Most of the vistas shown seem to be based on the geography of previous Zelda titles, in particular taking cues from Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past. We see what looks like Death Mountain, Gerudo Valley and the ruins of a church, possibly the Temple of Time, in several shots, along with other ruins and landmarks dotted throughout the map. The last shot in the trailer is also the Master Sword, old and rusted, in the middle of a forest grove.

One of the more interesting features shown in Breath of the Wild is the interactivity with the environment. Besides seeing Link cliff dive into a pool of water or parachute in the breeze across a forested vista, Link uses the environment to his advantage to fight and sneak around enemies, including pushing boulders, knocking down beehives, or even setting grass on fire at one point. We also see Link climbing around a lot of objects, which was teased last week.

Link also has a magical device of some kind, in the shape of a book that summons or controls objects as well. The book also seems to be tied to the world in other ways, as we see Link use it as a key to access what may be a dungeon of some sorts, complete with strange, glowing runes as a motif for the object.

Another little tidbit from the video is how Link changes outfits throughout; including your standard green tunic we see link wearing a blue shirt and plate armor at times, and using weapons like spears in combat instead of just swords and bows. It is a safe bet, like all Zelda games, that more items will be equipable and collectable throughout the adventure in Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo is promising that this new Zelda game is one of the biggest experiences they have ever created and that the demo of Breath of the Wild shown later today is only a fraction of the world players will be able to explore.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild still does not have a release date, but that may change later today, as Breath of the Wild will be released for both the Wii U and the Nintendo NX. In the meantime, you can find more of our E3 coverage at our E3 2016 Coverage Hub.
