Nintendo Direct Recap 1/11/18 - A Big Surprise That Everyone Saw Coming

Earlier this week there was all kinds of buzz surrounding Nintendo planning a surprise Nintendo Direct. Between teasing posts and some cryptic tweets, it seemed that Nintendo was certainly up to something. It was then with no fanfare that the Nintendo Direct website launched.

TWEWY Remix

The first announcement from the Nintendo Direct Mini is that The World Ends With You will be coming to Nintendo Switch as the - Final Remix - Edition. This is over 10 years on from its original release with characters last appearing in the 3DS edition of Kingdom Hearts. Combat will be remixed using either touch controls or the Joycons and a new scenario will be added. This game will release this year.

Pokken Tournament will have Aegislash joining the battle as both of their forms. It will be available in one of the two paid DLC packs. Wave 1 will have Aegislash and support pokemonRayquaza and Mimikyu. In wave 2 players will have access to Blastoise and support Pokemon Mew and Celebi. This will also have avatar items and more. These will be released Jan 31st and March 23rd respectively and you can purchase the complete battle pack now.

Kirby Star Allies will show off new copy abilities like the artist ability and spider ability. You can also team up with others to create combo abilities. One example given is ice and water to create ice lances. By using these abilities in co-op you're able to reach places you'd be unable to get to before. Kirby Star Allies releases on March 16th and there is a demo available for Kirby Battle Royale right now. A demo for Dragon Quest Builders will also be available today.

Hyrule Warriors will also be coming to Nintendo Switch in a Deluxe Edition. This will bring all of the content including DLC from both the WiiU and Nintendo 3DS version into one package. The game will have local co-op and Breath of the Wild character costumes for Link and Zelda. Hyrule Warriors Deluxe Edition will release in Spring 2018.

mario tennis aces switch

Mario is returning to the court in Mario Tennis Aces. There will be a story mode added on top of the normal tournament gameplay with a variety of missions and boss battles. This game will be releasing this Spring.

Ys VIII: Lacrimose of DANA will also be coming to the Nintendo Switch. As you progress in this game you'll be able to upgrade your base as well as swap between three playable characters each with their own combat style. This will be available this summer.

Super Mario Odyssey will be getting a free update with Luigi's Balloon World, online competitive modes will be added. After completing the game you will need to find Luigi in the world to play Hide It mode where you can hide a balloon and then find another player's world. As a reward, you can move up in rankings. New outfits will also be included such as Sunshine Shades and knights armor. Added filters to the snapshot mode are also on the way. This update will be released in February.

Heroines from SNK will be taking on one another in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. In this 2D brawler, you'll be able to take on opponents and tag out with your partner for special attacks. Getting your opponent down to low enough health will also allow you to activate a Dream Finish attack. There is also full cosmetic character customization. This game will release this Summer.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle will also be getting a new story update where players will be able to take control of Donkey Kong. In the trailer we see him coming to Rabbid Peach's rescue and using a Banana as a boomerang. It is unknown if there will be a Rabbid DK to accompany him. This will be available in the Spring

Payday 2 will be launching with exclusive character Joy, a Japanese heister with a LED powered changing mask. They will also have their own set of weapons and hacker skills. Payday 2 will be launching on the 27th of February.

FE the new platformer will be coming to Switch. This trailer shows off new creatures that you'll experience along with your journey and the songs you can use to control them. FE will release on the 16th of February. Celeste the pixel platformer will also be coming to the Switch. The game will launch with different difficulty modes for those who want the experience, to those looking for a real challenge. Celeste will be releasing on the 25th of January.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will also be rereleasing for the Nintendo Switch. As well as returning characters Funky Kong will also be joining with added abilities like infinite rolls, infinite corkscrews underwater, and a double jump. Using a surfboard you can also stand on spikes. This game will be available May 4th.

The final announcement of the Mini Direct, and probably the largest, is the confirmation of the rumored Dark Souls coming to Nintendo Switch. In this first trailer, we see a campfire being lit as the title appears. Not much more is shown except for the release date, May 25th.
