Devil’s Third has a rocky history. That’s putting it lightly. It suffered from delays, a mid-development engine swap, and an eventual Wii U exclusive release that saw horrible sales and reviews. Now it seems it’s getting worse, as Nintendo has announced they’ll be shutting down the servers in six months.
Nintendo is taking three main steps as they go about the process of closing Devil’s Third‘s servers down. The first two steps will be happening very soon. The first is a price drop for the game, and the Nintendo eShop version of the game will see a 50% slash in prices as it permanently drops from $59.99 to $29.99. This price drop will be happening sometime today. A few days later Nintendo will go through with the second step. On June 27th at 12am EST Nintendo will stop all sales of Devil’s Third‘s microtransaction currency, called Golden Eggs. If you have any Golden Eggs you want to use then you will have 180 days from that day to use them. Finally, the game’s servers will be shut down on December 29th at 12am EST. The game came out on December 11th, 2015, so this means the servers will be only active for a little over a year.
Devil’s Third had a very troubled development history. Development started in 2008 when Tomonobu Itagaki and other members of Team Ninja left Tecmo to form Valhalla Game Studios. Originally Devil’s Third was going to be published by THQ and was planned for a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC release. When THQ closed down in 2013, Nintendo picked up Devil’s Third. At this point the team had to change engines, as originally they were running off the same engine that Darksiders II was using, and began to use Unreal Engine 3 to rebuild the game for the Wii U. Even when Nintendo picked it up they still didn’t seem to fully commit: Nintendo of America originally dropped the game before picking it back up due to fan request. Maybe Nintendo of America got it right, though, as our very negative review of the game points out.
Regardless, you can still grab Devil’s Third exclusively on the Nintendo Wii U if this is your sort of thing.
