Nihon Falcom, the developer of the Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series has recently put up a new site for the fourth and final installment in the series, Trails of Cold Steel IV, also known as Sen No Kiseki in Japanese. While the series was originally planned to be only a three-part series after the launch of the third game back in September Nihon Falcom announced they would be adding an additional title.
Originally, the site had a countdown on it with “The Destination of EREBOS” written underneath it. Once the countdown finished, the site now has additional information for Cold Steel IV as well as confirming a 2018 release window for the game. But, for those who haven't played III, spoilers abound!
"We actually intended to end the series with The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, but we thought it would be tough to end with one title and made a difficult decision," Toshihiro Kondo, the CEO of Nihon Falcom said to Dengeki PlayStation (translated via Gematsu). "[The next game] will truly be the last. We’re working for all the mysteries of the Empire Arc to reach the end of the line."
This isn't the first time in the franchise's history that a game was so massive it required splitting it in two. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky First Chapter, the original game of the Trails sub-series of Falcom's Legend of Heroes, was originally meant to be a single installment but with the length of the story, the span of the world and the limitations of consoles at the time required it to be split with Trails in the Sky SC being released in 2006, two years after the release of the first chapter.
