Publisher Bandai Namco have announced today that Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom will be coming to both PlayStation 4 and PC when it releases later this year. Developer Level-5 is working closely with former studio Ghibli animator Yoshiyuki Momose to bring us the sequel to the surprise hit RPG Ni No Kuni: Wrath of The White Witch. Momose served as art director on the original game which arrived on western PlayStation 3 systems back in 2013. Also returning for the sequel is composer Joe Hisaishi, creator of the first game's award winning soundtrack. The news of a PC release comes as a minor surprise after the original game appeared exclusively on the PS3 and a gameplay trailer showcasing some of the game's combat system and story was shown first at last year's PlayStation Experience, which you can see below.

The art style for the new game differs slightly from the original which mirrored studio Ghibli's style closely. This time around, Momose is working directly for Level-5 without support from the wider team at the animation studio and the game seems to have an even more unique look as a result. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is not a direct sequel to the original title. Instead, it tells the new tale of Evan, King of the cat folk, who is banished from his former Kingdom of Ding Dong Dell after a coup. The game will follow Evan as he attempts to build his own kingdom and unite the world with the help of his friends and the strange creatures known as Higgledies.

The developers tell us that Higgledies are creatures of the heart, a power found within people, animals, and elements, and only those pure of heart can see them. Practically, it appears from the recent gameplay trailer that these creatures will accompany the heroes in battle and allow the player to utilize various elemental attacks. It seems that these Higgledies will take the place of the 'familiars' of the original game and will support the player characters in battle. The release window for Ni No Kuni II has yet to be narrowed down, all we know so far is that the game is scheduled to release later this year on PC and PS4. How do you think Ni No Kuni II is shaping up so far? Does a PC release make you more likely to pick this one up? Give us your take in the comments.
