A while back, I reviewed the original Umihara Kawase for one of our Rewind Review Weeks. Since then I've become a big fan of the series, and I've been hoping to see Studio Saizensen tackle another. For a short period of time the company went through some heavy financial trouble, with their publisher going under, but thankfully the company ended up finding new ownership and seem to be doing better than ever. So, despite the last game in the Umihara series literally being called "Goodbye Umihara Kawase" (Sayonara Umihara Kawase), it seems that a new title in the series could maybe happen in the future.

Cue TGS and alongside the expected news from bigger developers/publishers, it seems we've gotten a wry confirmation that Umihara Kawase will be getting yet another game in the franchise, and it appears to be coming to the Nintendo Switch. @success_g3 on Twitter posted the following, found outside of the SUCCESS Corp booth:

Of course, the game that's being teased hasn't been named, but that silhouette is unmistakable, and the text is translated as "We're making a new title in the series!" and "Development is planned for Nintendo Switch." No more information is given, as technically it's not announced yet, but hopefully it's only a matter of time until we'll be seeing the next title in the Umihara Kawase series officially unveiled.

Quick Take

It's always nice to a see surprises like this at TGS, and as someone that's always been a fan of those niche Japanese titles, it's what makes the show my favorite time of year. I absolutely loved what I played of the series on Vita, and with my infatuation for the Switch reaching a fever pitch, this has quickly become my game of show—even if all we have is a teaser. Here's hoping we can play this sooner rather than later. Welcome back, Umihara Kawase!
