Payday 2 John Wick

A new, free Payday 2 DLC will be available for download today for everyone. It includes many new features, like weapons and a new perk system, but most surprising of all is the inclusion of content relating to the movie John Wick. Please correct us if we are wrong, but TechRaptor is confident this may be the first example of movie related content making its way into a pre-existing game as opposed to making a licensed standalone version.

Readers in the comments below have let us know that this is not the first time this has happened as there have been movie tie=ins with Broforce and Plauge Inc. Still, this may be significant seeing how popular Payday 2 is, but only time will tell.

But back to the update. The free DLC comes as a reward to the Payday 2 fanbase for reaching the milesone of 1.5 million members in the Payday 2 steam community. They are calling it Crimefest and it adds some new features that people will be interested in.

There are some basic features like a new pistol and knife, as well as some cosmetic items, but most Payday 2 fans will be delighted to hear about the new perk system called "Akimbo." Akimbo allows the player to dual wield weapons - which as we all know has been missing for far too long from the bank robber's arsenal.

The biggest/most surprising addition though, as mentioned earlier, is that of the new playable character John Wick. It's cool to see a new playable character, but it is far more interesting as to why the character is there at all. Obviously, this is advertising for the movie John Wick, but its effects may be larger than that. This may very well set a new precedent in the way studios choose to license gaming content for movies in the future. It's a whole lot easier to pay an established group of game developers, and likely choose popular games like Payday 2 here, than to start from scratch.

Obviously, big franchises out there like the upcoming Star Wars films will have their own thing, but new movies that are not established like John Wick may very well see going the DLC route as viable in the future. John Wick seems to be a movie whose titular character knows how to shoot guns, meaning it wouldn't be too surprising to see other similar characters show up in other FPSs. The same could be said for a sword wielding character or anything else easily relatable to gaming.

Now the question many will have is whether this is a good thing or not. That is hard to tell really, as in this case John Wick's inclusion doesn't change the game drastically. But whose to say that in the future some DLC that is a tie-in to a movie won't do that? As with everything else, there will probably be good and bad examples.

Also if you are planning to see John Wick and don't own Payday 2 yet, you can purchase the tickets through Fandango and receive a free download of Payday 2 on Steam.
