Idea Factory is bringing retro-styled shmup Neptunia Shooter to Steam later this month, on May 21st. Initially thought to be an April Fool's joke, Idea Factory came back with a full-fledged announcement a week later, confirming it was an actual project - a largely self-contained, arcade shooter, and not a sprawling 40+ RPG. Still, Neptunia Shooter will come with six different playable characters, including some of your favorite Neptunia goddesses. There's also an online leaderboard function, so you can boast about your high scores to the entire world. There's no price information available currently, but Neptunia Shooter is set to launch on Steam later this month.

Neptune and her friends find themselves trapped in a strange 2D space dimension, filled with plenty of baddies and former allies. She and her many friends all pack different bullet patterns, leaving you to experiment across the six distinct stages for the best combination. Dogoos are your only enemy here, outside of the bosses, making for a colorful romp through a retro take on Neptune.

This isn't the first time the Neptunia games have branched out genre-wise, either. Despite repeated delays, Neptune is set to appear in the first game developed by a Western studio in Super Neptunia RPG, coming later this year. Many of the Neptunia games are known for providing a humorous look at different game genres and consoles, as seen through the eyes of a ditzy yet adorable cast of characters. There doesn't appear to be much in the way of dialogue this time around, but more creativity from the Idea Factory team is always welcome. Neptunia Shooter launches on May 21st, under three weeks away.
