Nepal Earthquake

In the wake of the devastating earthquake which killed thousands in Nepal and left many more without homes, some major companies in the tech and gaming industries have stepped up to raise funds for the relief effort.

Ubisoft has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross to raise money to provide medical care to those who desperately need it, in Nepal. The team within Ubisoft who developed Far Cry 4, a game inspired heavily by Nepal and its culture, felt compelled to assist in dealing with this tragedy. Anyone can make donations to the Red Cross with this form, and the Far Cry 4 team will match the donations, up to $100,000.

Ubisoft isn't the only game company interested in raising money for Nepal. Sega recently expressed their condolences to the victims of the earthquake, and made a donation of 2 million yen($16,000) to the Japanese Red Cross. Sega will be raising additional funds for the relief effort through in-game purchases. The specific items that will be used to raise money will be announced to players though in-game messages.

Humble Bundle, which is well known for selling collections of indie games for whatever price the customer is willing to pay, is also raising money for the relief effort. The customer chooses how the money they paid is split between the developers, Humble Bundle itself, and one of several participating charities that the customer can choose to support. One of the charities working with Humble Bundle is the Red Cross, who is currently raising money for the relief effort in Nepal

Outside the world of gaming, there are several tech companies stepping up to help with the relief effort as well. Facebook has announced a fundraising campaign which matches every dollar donated, up to $2 million. The money goes to the International Medical Corps, which will bring medical care to the affected region. In addition to donations, Facebook is also providing another service to help those in the region. Facebook's safety check tool allows people in the affected area to send out alerts to let their families know they are okay.

Apple is also helping out with the relief effort. Users can make donations to the Red Cross through iTunes, which will provide food, shelter, and emotional support to the victims of the disaster. According to Apple, 100% of the donation will be passed on to the Red Cross, but the Red Cross will be unable to acknowledge the donation because no personal information is shared with them by Apple. Although, unlike the other companies mentioned in the article who are matching donations with their own, Apple isn't really adding anything to the relief effort.

Major gaming and tech companies have shown the world their better nature by stepping up and helping with the relief effort. We hope that the money raised by these companies will help all those who are in need of food, shelter, or medicine, in the wake of this horrible tragedy.
