The long running racing series has not just received a reboot but also a shortened name. Now called Need for Speed, the reboot is set to be released later this year.

Aside from the admittedly short teaser, Need for Speed "... returns in Fall 2015 to PS4, Xbox One and PC in an action driving experience that unites the culture of speed. The new NFS game will feature deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game."

An emphasis is being placed on Need for Speed's history, with Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games stating that, "Need for Speed [is] one of the most iconic names in gaming... we're returning it to greatness in this reboot... pulling on our 20 years of history... we are making the game that we've always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination..."

The title will be developed by Ghost Studios, the developer behind Need for Speed Rivals, which was released in 2013. Ghost Studios are also cooperating with speedhunters.com, with the aim to "... deliver an experience that's grounded in authentic car culture... [throughout] the research and development of the game."

Reportedly, Need for Speed has been in development for 18 months thus far, with an approximate two year development cycle for when the game is due to be released. With the title "... completely made from scratch..." This will be an interesting proposition from EA, especially with their previously expressed desire to change for the better. With the recent delay of Battlefield Hardline and the disastrous launch of Battlefield 4, all eyes with be on Need for Speed, one of the most important franchises in EA's portfolio.

The full trailer for Need for Speed will be released June 15th.
