The NBA 2K14 servers have been brought back up after its server switch-off triggered huge amounts of complaints from its players.

The servers which had originally been taken down on March 31 had meant the players save file could not be accessed as it needed authentication from 2K's servers. The reason for this is because even though the mode is played offline the way its career mode and virtual currency are implemented in the game, users are required to check in with online servers.

It was possible for players to continue playing but a new offline save would have to be created, completely starting again.

In a statement to polygon 2K have said,

2K has restored the NBA 2K14 servers and all online services. Beginning today, we are extending the support of all NBA 2K servers from 18 to 27 months following each release, giving our players more time to experience and enjoy the highest rated NBA simulation video game franchise. The opinions of our community continue to have a positive impact on our business decisions as we strive to create the best possible experience for all of our fans.

The servers have now been given an extra nine months of life for users to play their single-player career. On 2K's website for what servers are currently active at this time 2K14 is not on the list.

When the servers were shutdown on March 31 they had only been active for 18 mouths which is one of the shortest among other annual sports franchises. Now with this extension it seems 2K is still trying to figure out the right amount of time before it can drop connectivity for its games. The way the NBA 2K games are structured though, with even its single-player mode needing to be authenticated by the server, means this will be an issue every time they try to shut their games servers down.
