It seemed for the longest time that movie tie-in games were going extinct, or at least were going to be confined to iOS and Android games. Yet between the recently announced Ghostbusters video game and now this, it seems we’ll be seeing some new movie tie-in games on the market.
Based on the upcoming The Huntsman: Winter’s War movie, The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse is an episodic turn-based RPG that takes place in the same universe as the film. Developed by Desert Owl Games, Winter’s Curse features a card based battle system. During your turns you’ll draw cards that will determine the actions your characters can take, not much unlike Gamecube classic Baten Kaitos. In turn, the cards you bring into battle will be determined by the equipment your character wears.
The game’s story follows Elisabeth, who makes a promise to her dying father to find her lost brothers. Along the way she meets a mage named Marcus who is also seeking her brothers for unknown reasons. While these two will always be in your party, there will be a third slot that will see different characters occupy it as the game progresses. The game will also feature choices that you will have to make through out it that will effect the story’s outcome and change how you progress through the game.
Developer Desert Owl Games doesn’t seem to have much under their belt yet, so far their only project being taking over the free to play turn-based strategy/card game Pox Nora: Battlefield of the Immortals after Octopi Media Design Labs closed down. The developers website says they are also currently working on a dungeon crawler and a space-themed turn-based strategy game.
If The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse sounds interesting to you then you won’t have to wait long or pay much to try it out. The game will come out on Steam on April 20th, and the first episode (or book as they’ll be called here) will be completely free with future books costing an as-of-yet unknown price. The game will also come out on the PlayStation 4 later this year.
