Minecraft has a fair bit of spelunking and monster slaying, but now Mojang is creating an entirely new action-adventure experience with the announcement of Minecraft: Dungeons at MINECON Earth 2018 today.

First things first, Minecraft: Dungeons is a brand-new game and not tacked-on DLC or a mod. According to the official announcement, this game is "inspired by classic dungeon crawlers." This means, among other things, you'll progress by gaining new weapons and items.

You can also expect items and weapons to be class-specific. In the trailer, it shows warrior, cleric, thief, and wizard archtypes, although the exact names and specifics of each class are still unknown.

If you want to fight by yourself, that's fine, but Minecraft: Dungeons has full multiplayer support:

You can brave the dungeons alone, or team up with friends. Up to four players can battle together through action-packed, treasure-stuffed, wildly varied levels, all in an epic quest to save the villagers and take down the evil Arch-Illager!

Minecraft: Dungeons launches on PC in 2019, but for now you can keep an eye on the game's official website.

Mojang also announced some big new changes to regular Minecraft at MINECON Earth today. The next major game update, called "Village and Pillage," will feature (you guessed it) brand new villagers. A leatherworker, fletcher, armorer, and weaponsmith are just a few new villager types you can find, each with new appearances.

The second part of the update includes a threat to villages and its inhabitants, according to the announcement:

The nefarious Pillagers and their Beasts will be joining Minecraft to cause all kinds of havoc upon unsuspecting villages. That’s not nice! That’s not nice at all!
On top of that, there's added village variety depending on biomes, and crossbows.

Other smaller changes to Minecraft include pandas, add-on updates, an updating to the taiga biome, and free marketplace content called "Inspiration Island." Check out MINECON Earth 2018's official announcement page for all the details.

Quick Take

I do not have the artistic ability to create amazing structures in Minecraft, but I always enjoyed exploring the game with friends and doing what little I can to contribute. I am quite pleased with the little teaser for Minecraft: Dungeons and it seems like the kind of Minecraft experience I'll enjoy. Plus, I love me some dungeon crawling action!

The other additions announced at MINECON Earth look pretty cool too. The Village and Pillage update adds some needed purpose to the villages, so this might be what gets me back into the game.
