Mimpi Dreams

Ever wonder what dogs are dreaming about when they growl and move their legs in their sleep? Well, that still may be a mystery at large, but we do know that a little dog named Mimpi dreams of saving princesses, collecting bones and jumping between precarious perches in Silicon Jelly’s mobile game Mimpi Dreams. This puzzle platformer delivers a fun and casual experience for the whole family.

Mimpi Dreams is a sequel to the original game Mimpi, an adventure-platformer. The first game was about a dog searching for his master, platforming his way through the world and having a fun adventure along the way. In the sequel, little dog Mimpi is safely sleeping in his doghouse but in his dreams he is saving the day in exotic and fantastical locations.

The art is adorable in a simple cartoony sort of style that accommodates a download size that is less than 100 MB. The music is also nice and has a creepy-cute quality to it. The soundtrack  was composed by award-winners Jaroslav Vyhnička and Alexandre Guiraud and adds a lot of character to the game.

Whether Mimpi is saving lab rats or reuniting love birds, he’ll have to overcome a combination of traditional platforming obstacles and simple puzzles. Platforming includes tried and true pitfalls, timed traps and floor spikes that will test player’s reflexes. Puzzles tend to utilize touch controls by manipulating the environment and completing actions in the right order.

While Mimpi Dreams isn’t a particularly challenging game, it’s still fun to play. The difficulty level makes it a great game for children and it’s rated 9+ for some infrequent cartoon/fantasy violence. The platforming is more tedious than frustrating, yet there’s still some interesting ways to get around obstacles and multiple paths to explore. Puzzles aren’t particularly heavy thinkers but some are still satisfying when completed.

An added level of difficulty and gameplay is found in the collectibles included in the game. Bones are scattered in hard to reach places, special costumes for Mimpi to wear can be earned throughout the worlds and hints in the form of light bulb icons can be collected. Trying to get a perfect score will mean figuring out how to get to all the bones and while the game can be completed without a single hint, it sure is nice to have some extra hint bulbs in your inventory when you’re not sure what to do.

The existence of the hints creates an interesting difficulty level balance between platforming mechanics and puzzle solving. Using the hints makes puzzle solving extremely easy in most cases however, some of them can be hard to get to. Overall it’s a nice way to balance the game and make it fun and not frustrating for those that are better at puzzle solving compared to platforming or vice versa.

Even a nine year old wouldn't need a hint to answer this guards question correctly, but they're not all this easy.

The controls in Mimpi Dreams are interesting for a mobile game. There’s directional arrows for moving side to side as well as for jumping up. Objects in the environment can also be tapped in order to manipulate them, and the game cleverly integrates touch controls for a puzzle platformer. Basic movement is done with directional arrows, keeping fingers from obscuring the pretty scenery, and key objects can be tapped on to add a wider variety of actions Mimpi can take.

With only part one of the game released, including five levels to master and worlds to explore Mimpi Dreams is a quick play. It’s priced to match at less than $5, and is currently available for iPhones and iPads but will be coming to other platforms as well. It’s also compatible with Apple TV and Apple Watches.

Mimpi Dreams may not be the most challenging puzzle platformer but it makes up for any difficulty level disappointment with a heaping helping of charm. It does a great job of integrating touch controls with traditional platforming and puzzle solving. Some challenges in the game are better than others, but players can be sure that it will never be too frustrating. It will appeal to those that enjoy adventure platformers like Scarygirl and Chariot.
