As we approach the release date of February 21st for Halo Wars 2, more information about the latest addition to Microsoft’s popular Halo series is being released.

Unfortunately for North American fans, Microsoft has announced a change to their plans for a worldwide release of physical retail versions of Halo Wars 2 on PC. While they are still partnering with THQ Nordic to release physical editions of the game for Windows 10, these will now be available exclusively in Europe. No explanation for the canceled North American release has been given.

Information has also been released regarding Blitz Mode, a new feature coming to Halo Wars 2. The mechanics of Blitz Mode are different to the RTS multiplayer and campaign modes of the game, with the goal of Blitz being to get matches down to a length of 7-12 minutes each. In order to make these more accessible players, it runs on the basic mechanics of a card game with the "rock-paper-scissors" dynamic featured in the Halo series. Decks are built up featuring units from the main game and will have leader cards allowing players to change the style of a desk. Games can be played in either PvE or PvP styles and either can be played solo or with a friend.

Blitz attempts to keep the basics of RTS mode while stripping out some of the more complex elements which might be daunting for non-RTS players. New card packs for Blitz Mode will be acquired one of two ways, either through regular play or through additional micro-transactions. The microtransactions will be separate from the currently offered Season Pass for the game. Revenue from them has been stated to go into developing long term additional content which will be available either for free or through the season pass.
