Microsoft's game subscription service Xbox Game Pass may be making its way to the PC as reported by Eurogamer.
The Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service where Xbox One owners can pay a monthly fee of $9.99 and receive unlimited access to a rotating library of titles. The service was announced in February of last year. Since its debut on June 1, the pass has added in new games every month including a number of high-profile console exclusives. Now, that same service is may very well be making its way to the PC in the near future.
Microsoft recently held a conference call for its Fiscal Year 2019 First Quarter earnings. It's available to listen to online, but you can spare yourself the boredom by checking out a transcription of the call at SeekingAlpha. The relevant passage is in a small portion on page 10:
Satya Nadella - Microsoft Corp.In context, the statement was given while talking about the expansion of Microsoft's reach in the gaming market. The ability to play Game Pass games on PC has existed in a fashion thanks to Play Anywhere titles also being accessible on PCs for current subscribers. Strictly speaking, this isn't a firm announcement of the program coming to PC, but it was said by Microsoft's CEO and I think it's fair to say he can speak on the subject with authority. That said, plans can change and we don't yet have any kind of big official announcement about the service's expansion just yet.[...]
So given that structural position, we are going to make sure that we keep increasing the strength of the community. You see that already with Minecraft going to all platforms and that increasing the intensity of the community and you'll see us do more of that. Obviously, bringing Game Pass to even the PC is going to be a big element of that.
Unfortunately, that's all we know for now. There are a number of unanswered questions regarding the potential of the Game Pass on PC. Will it include Xbox One-exclusive games or will it stick to PC titles only? Will it be all-inclusive with the console version or will it be a separate subscription?
Considering the success of the program, it seems like a smart move to expand operations to the PC. Hopefully, we'll see some more substantial details in the coming weeks and months.
