Phil Spencer was just about to end the Microsoft Press Conference, but a sudden, final announcement cut in. The screens and livestream cut out, and a DOS-like screen came up. It was as if E3 had been hacked. It hadn't been, but a trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 was shown.

Witcher makers CD Projekt Red's upcoming narrative-driven, open-world role-playing game will be set in a dangerous, poverty-filled California city called Night City. It is nonetheless a city of dreams: people can still make it, as is shown by several luxurious apartments and rich fat cats. Megacorporations and gangs control everything. Guns, cyborgs, and other technological horrors were shown in the seedy urban setting.

In it, you play as V, a hired gun and "cyberpunk" who has gotten his first serious contract. The game will have "cyber-enhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners and corporate lifehackers" and you will seek to become an "urban legend."

In a post on Reddit, scant more was revealed. You will be able to create your own character. As other users there have noted, this likely means that Cyberpunk's V will be like Commander Shepard from Mass Effect: a character in the story whom you can nonetheless change the appearance of.

On DLC, CD Projekt said to expect no less than what came with The Witcher III. The game will also be "100% DRM-free on PC."

No release date was given, but we're "much closer" to one than when the game was first announced, CD Projekt says.

Check out the trailer below.
