Konami’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid V is guaranteed to be the game of the year, according to Jon Edwards, a marketing executive for Konami. Edwards recently spoke in an interview with MCVUK about the upcoming release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Basically, it is the most engrossing and stunning game of the year,

Anyone who has spent any amount of time with it has been blown away by its depth, scope and ambition. It is one of those games where people go: ‘I wonder if I can do this?’ and they inevitably can. Many games claim to be sandbox, open-world affairs, but Metal Gear Solid V does offer incredible freedom. Yes, there are missions, but it is truly up to you how they are tackled. When we have shown it to the press, the interesting thing is that they don’t discuss just the missions or what they played, but how they did it. You get people swapping different stories, and discussing how they beat certain elements.

It’s the game of the year–guaranteed.

Edwards also stated he believes Metal Gear Solid is the only proper stealth title, and “transcends limitations,”

‘Is there really a stealth market?’ Edwards retorts. ‘I’d argue that Metal Gear Solid is pretty much the only proper stealth title, and even then it is just a part of the whole. Sneaking is a key part of the game, but The Phantom Pain transcends such limitations, with decoys, snipers, a buddy system, and weapon drops and airstrikes. I would argue it is a true combat title, with stealth elements. And, thus, one of a kind.’

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain releases September 5th, 2015 for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. TechRaptor recently wrote on our most anticipated games for Fall, one of which is Metal Gear Solid V.

  • Ricardo Lima

I will get this game eventually but Konami antics (the treatement of Kojima, review boot camp, etc) convinced me to wait for a promotion a year or two down the road.

  • Reptile

“The fish seller says his fish is the best”.
I Think it will be GOTY, not because Konami said but because I have faith in Kojima.

  • Audie Bakerson

If it isn’t GotY we’ll break some legs!

  • Robert Grosso

I kind of want it to fail now, and someone else take the title….

  • Im really looking forward to this game…but….its starting to sound like WAY to much hype surrounding this game…

  • Galbador

These comments are the last nail of the coffin for this game in my eyes. Just for that, I won’t buy this game. Konami, you really know how to piss off people and for that I give you the bill.

  • Caio Pontes

Sold! When a marketing exechurglgllgl I couldn’t finish that sentence.

  • SugarFreeTargets

Remember when HTC said the One M9 was gonna be the best phone but was nothing but one giant fail? Yeah, I have a feeling it’ll be just like that.

  • bdp

    >Game company calls their own game the best.
    Well color me surprised.

  • Tanooki

the only competition it has is Bloodborne. so who knows.

  • Tanooki

or wait, fallout 4 as well?

  • ParasiteX

Looool… apparently no-one mentioned to Konami that Fallout 4 is also coming out this year…
And with the shitty reputation they’ve been gaining lately, with their treatment of Kojima and their employees in general. I HIGHLY doubt MGS5 will ever become a GOTY title..

  • ParasiteX

Yeah. Fallout 4 is a very strong contender for GOTY. And Bethesda as a company has a much better reputation now than Konami. Which will affect the way people will vote in for GOTY awards.

  • ParasiteX

Oh yeah. and there is also The Witcher 3.

  • Inb4Fallout4ProvesKonamiWrong

  • And Hotline Miami 2 IMO; although that’s indie.

  • Alex

To me The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is GOTY

  • Inquiring

Anyone who was not interested in this game and has kept up with the leaks and watched the early streams knows that the only “of the Year” MGSV deserves starts with the word “Disappointment”.

It is nothing special for an open world game, in terms of gameplay or mission variety. As for story, well, Kojima is the only word you need to hear. Anyone who has played the series, especially the shit shows that were MGS4 and PW, should know that Kojima is someone who does worse the more creative control he has.

What is sad, though, is the Konami exec might be right. On just name alone this has very high chances of winning GotY awards, despite the fact it does not deserve it in any way, shape, or form.

  • Rüshiera

Witcher 3 indeed deserves it, expansion + 16 dlc for free + tons of other stuff and those reviewer dogfuckers will still give Metal Gear GOTY, just cause of its name

  • Rüshiera

Bloodborne is shit compared to Witcher 3, Fallout 4

“I’d argue that Metal Gear Solid is pretty much the only proper stealth title”…

What planet is this person living on? I haven’t really been a hardcore gamer in a long time–though obviously I still nurture an interest in the culture and hobby–but even I know about the “Thief” and “Splinter Cell” series. Not to mention older games like GoldenEye for the N64 also helped to popularize stealth mechanics in gaming. I’m sure there are many other stealth-based gems I have no clue about.

It’s really hard to stomach that the company that brought me so many great gaming experiences, both at home AND in the arcade (I’m an early 80s baby), has become so dickish and full of shit.

  • Jonathan Luke Whittington

Jon Edwards (and Konami) couldn’t possibly have their heads ANY FURTHER UP THEIR OWN COLLECTIVE ASSES to think that MGS is the ‘only proper stealth title’!! That’s a slap to the face to every fan of the Thief (not the reboot) and Splinter Cell (not Conviction) games. They don’t even do mixed action/stealth as well as Deus Ex.

Shouldn’t it WORRY the fans that they don’t even acknowledge their clearly superior competitors in the west, who’ve had them beat since at least 2000?

  • Jonathan Luke Whittington

Splatoon. Yeah, yeah, it’s Nintendo but if you haven’t played it you’d be surprised how much fun (and how balanced) it is. And with the constant stream of free updates, this game won’t be disappearing anytime soon.

  • Mr Snow

Anything other than The Witcher 3 getting game of the year is an affront to common sense and reason.

A game that has to sequester reviewers, on top of providing them an expense paid environment to review in (iirc, hotels, flights, meals, etc were comped by Konami) is nothing but tarnished when that GOTY gets handed out to it.

I mean, seriously, who can trust that?

  • Mr Snow

Call it a contender when it gets released.

I hate Game of the Year titles because people seem to only remember the last two months of gaming, much like presidential elections…

  • quickshooter

truely you can pay less for MGSV TPP with g2a
    it’s about 42$

  • Alex

MGS is an older franchise and no one is doubting the won’t be great just like fallout 4
