Today, Coldwild Games announced a Steam Early Access release date of July 30 for Merchant of the Skies, a sky trader simulator.

In Merchant of the Skies, players find themselves as a captain of an airship in a world composed of floating islands. In it, they can explore the world, sell items, and gather resources to help build their own trading network above the clouds. Merchant of the Skies is a trading game where players can indulge in some light base-building along with some tycoon elements. Starting off as a captain, players continue to build their trade until their establish their own company. Basically, Coldwild Games describes it as a "peaceful trading game that allows for relaxed base-building and management experience."

Eventually, the game will have the player uniting the floating islands and restoring the world to its former glory. Right now, though, there will be squad-based objectives and missions for the player to complete, as well as an infinite sandbox mode for players to play around in and break. Looks like the skies the limit here, amirite?

Merchant of the Skies will be available tomorrow at Noon EDT for Windows, OSX, and Linux. It's full release will be between November 2019 and February 2020.

Quick Take

I'm interested, if only for the general theme behind it. There's a certain whimsical childhood-dreamlike quality to it that I can definitely appreciate. Living and peacefully creating a trade empire above the clouds? It's a really cool idea that has a lot of potential, at least for me. Will it reach that potential, though? It's hard to tell. I'll be keeping an eye on it, if only to see how well it does for its Early Access launch and later development cycle down the road.

What do you think of this game? Do you think it has enough to remain interesting? Are you interested? Let us know what you think!
