Update: 343 Industries head Bonnie Ross took to the official Halo Waypoint forums to comment on the Haggar prototype. Her full statement is included here, confirming that it was one of several exploratory projects that the company has looked into developing.

Over the past few days, footage has recently made the rounds of an exploratory Xbox 360 project we worked on several years ago, known as “Haggar.” Since then, we’ve received a lot of great feedback from the community. Haggar was something we prototyped with our friends at Mega Bloks that focused on the elements of action, exploration and user creativity found within the Halo universe. Haggar had a lot of fun ideas and invention behind it, but ultimately didn’t progress beyond the early prototyping levels that are shown in the recent video. This is just one example of several similar projects we have evaluated throughout the years – a process that we continue exploring on an ongoing basis.

There are some games that you don't know you want until they're announced. Tragically, some dream games are never announced at all, as is the case here with the newly revealed Mega Bloks Halo prototype. Looking to iterate on Traveller's Tales' popular LEGO franchise with Mega Bloks and the Halo franchise, the Haggar prototype was developed by n-Space for around twelve months in 2013 and was just recently uncovered by YouTube game archivist Andrew Borman and shared on his channel PtoPOnline.

Going through the available footage, the game would have featured modern Halo and a setting clearly inspired by Combat Evolved. There were a pair of campaign levels completed as well as a Firefight-like horde mode which featured constructive structures, tying into the building blocks theme of the game. Music and sounds were ripped straight from the existing games, and humorous slapstick moments occur as enemies are introduced. The gameplay looks to have been a mixture of light third-person shooting and 2.5D platforming, and Halo fans will be pleased to see the inclusion of iconic elements such as the Bubble Shield.

Near the end of the video, Andrew speculates that the game met its demise partially due to its existence as an Xbox 360 title in the months leading up to the Xbox One launch. The game has never been officially acknowledged by 343 Industries or Microsoft, so it's hard to pin down an exact reason why a promising prototype such as this would have been scuttled.

Quick Take

As someone who has been spending most of his holiday break playing through Lego Dimensions and having a great time, the thought that the world could have seen a merger between two of my favorite things in gaming is tantalizing. This footage truly does look great, especially some of the subtle ways that developer n-Space were expanding on the concepts of what a "Lego game" could be. Focusing on building structures and destructible environments could have been just the kick in the pants that Traveler's Tales needed, as the entire Lego franchise has been stagnating for years. What could have been...
