Six months after it started, Loot Crate's Loot Play digital gaming subscription service is to be placed on pause indefinitely.
The service, which cost $10-$12 (depending on plan) and was similar to subscription models like Humble Monthly, delivered five curated indie games to subscribers each month. Loot Play was originally launched in October 2018 and its inaugural offering was Devolver Digital and Fourattic's 1980s homage Crossing Souls. More recent titles include space western Exoplanet: First Contact and fast-paced shooter Overload.
The exact reason behind the suspension of Loot Play isn't clear. Loot Crate says that Loot Play has had "an exciting first six months", but that the program will be put on hold for the foreseeable future. March's offering, featuring Exoplanet: First Contact and four other mystery games, will be the final delivery for current subscribers. Despite the program being suspended, Loot Crate says it isn't yet done with Loot Play, and the company is looking into new ways to bring subscribers digital gaming content in the future.
If you're a subscriber and you had a multi-month subscription, Loot Crate says you'll be provided with a prorated refund within the next 30 days. The company is inviting anyone with further questions or comments to contact their Customer Support team. Again, we're not yet sure what program will take the place of Loot Play or when the replacement will launch. We'll have more news for you on this as we get it.
Loot Crate describers itself as a "geek subscription box for gamers & nerds". The company delivers monthly boxes of geek and gaming-related merchandise to subscribers around monthly themes. It was founded in 2012 and enjoyed over 200,000 subscribers worldwide by 2014. Latest subscription crate collections include boxes themed around Rick and Morty, Adult Swim, The Elder Scrolls, and Lord of the Rings.
