StarCraft II - Legacy of the Void

The patches keep on coming for StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, the latest adding a new map, Mist Opportunities, and Alarak, a new Commander to StarCraft II's Co-op Missions mode. Below is a look at some of what is in StarCraft II's 3.6.0 patch.

The first and foremost of the changes is the new Commander, Alarak, who is the first Commander to be playable on the battlefield. He is an "offensive-orientated" hero that is weak on the battlefield but the last alive, due to the fact he can sacrifice other units to stay alive.

You can test out Alarak on the new map Mist Opportunities, on which the objective is to harvest terrazine gas. In order to do so you have to protect the automated Harvesting Bots that will spawn on the map.

If you want to mess about with a pre-made group on the maps, you can now do so with a friend. Custom Mutators allow players to create customizable "challenges" with up to ten mutators that can be added to each mission. In order to utilize Custom Mutators, both of your Commanders must be at least level 5.

To help implement patches, such as 3.6.0, a new 1 v 1 Matchmaker has been implemented. Just look for the "Testing" Matchmaker to help test out new maps or balance changes. As one would expect, the games will be unranked, and one can check the "Balance Info" button to see which balance changes are being tested.

A few bug fixes have been implemented into the patch as well, such as an issue where whispers could fail to be sent with an error message to tell the whisperer that the recipient was not online. If you want to see the rest of the changes, go here.

Quick Take:

Blizzard Entertainment is well-known for its continuing support of its games, (Diablo II received a patch earlier this year) so seeing another substantial StarCraft II patch is not unexpected but a still-welcome sight. Hopefully this is something that will continue well into the future, as besides StarCraft II the RTS genre is still on life-support.
