Silent Hills

Back in April, the highly anticipated Hideo Kojima/Guillermo Del Toro team-up Silent Hills was cancelled. Yet in a recent IGN interview, Del Toro states he and Kojima would be collaborating in the future:

'I love working with Kojima-san,' Says Del Toro. 'We are still in touch. We are still friends and working into doing something together, but that’s not going to be [Silent Hills].'
Silent Hills was set to be the ninth installment in the Silent Hill series, with a critically praised demo, titled P.T., released in August 2014 on the Playstation Store for PS4. In April, the game was officially cancelled and the demo was removed from the Playstation Store.

Around the same time, rumors of Kojima being fired from Konami circulated. While these claims were addressed by Konami to be "categorically incorrect," Solid Snake's Japanese voice actor Akio Otsuka confirmed over Twitter that Kojima Productions had been disbanded. Many of the in-game credits attributing Kojima and the team were removed from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and the team's logos have been removed from the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain site and from artwork. Kojima Productions’ website also redirects to Konami’s Metal Gear Solid portal. Though not outright confmired, the implications seem to say that Kojima will be leaving Konami once work on Metal Gear Solid V is finished. Some like Ollie Boarder of Forbes suggest it was a combination of new Konami management headed by the previous chairman's son, Takuya Kozuki, declining sales and high production costs demanded from Kojima, though at this point it's all speculation.

Quick Take

Kojima is a brilliant man with one of gaming's most legendary series under his belt. If this collaboration comes to fruition, we may see the next Kojima IP become the new name in horror games. But considering Del Toro's history of projects that never see the light, we might be waiting a while for the next horror masterpiece.
