It’s no secret that Kingdom Come: Deliverance ends on a cliffhanger, as the developer’s PR Manager mentioned recently. To be more accurate, it ends with an “Epilogue” quest that’s a very obvious setup for a sequel. This quest involves the player character, Henry of Skalitz, and the titular character of this second DLC, The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon. Most players will probably start the DLC during the Epilogue, as I did. However, you can also start it right after the quests “Next to Godliness” and “Robber Baron” during the main storyline. If you start it during the Epilogue, you'll find it odd, as it reverts the whole point of that quest.

As I rode off into the sunset with Capon, I had to stop and talk to him. He tells me he's in love and he wants to court some trollop in Rattay. So we have to go back from riding off into the sunset. At this point, that’s the signature of Warhorse Studios’ quest design. It would be totally incoherent if it weren’t so in keeping with the character. Hans Capon is the typical snobbish, fickle aristocrat who treats commoners like dirt. He treats Henry the same way, and they nearly come to fisticuffs during the main storyline. After those quests mentioned above, where they work together, they become best buddies. When he asks you to help him with this ridiculous courting, you kind of want to see where that goes.

That’s what the entire DLC hinges on. If you don’t find Capon entertaining in his own way, you’ll probably hate the whole thing. Just as with From the Ashes, where if you’re not interested in the reactivity with certain characters, it probably won’t be worth playing. As I see it, it’s important to stress this point as a caveat. Especially considering that the main complaint from fans to every DLC so far has been the price tag. That said, I enjoyed both From the Ashes and The Amorous Adventures for what they are: a bundle of glorified side quests with some wonky yet entertaining quest design.

Whodunit?

The Amorous Adventures consist of two parts. First, Capon asks you to retrieve a necklace that he lost in a dice game. This is the strongest and more quest-driven half of the DLC. The search for the necklace will lead you to a camp of outlaws and gamblers where you can solve a mystery and play some dice. You can infiltrate the camp disguised as a nobleman called Sir Alphonse. Someone murdered this nobleman, and a friend of his wants you to solve the murder, though you can refuse it. So you don’t really have to solve the mystery or play dice at all. I really liked the dice tournament, but it's not a requirement. If you’re stealthy enough, you can just find the camp on your own and steal the necklace, completely undetected. It’s more effective, but arguably less fun.

To find the camp, you’ll have to decipher a hand-drawn map that can be a bit hard to pinpoint. The base game includes several of those hand-drawn maps, and if you enjoyed finding those treasures, it’ll be a welcome addition. It's really cool how you find the map itself, which I won’t spoil, but it’s not just handed to you. I also really like how you’ll go about solving the mystery in the camp. It’s similar to the base game quest “A Needle in a Haystack,” where you had to infiltrate the Sasau Monastery disguised as a monk. The quest design never actually gives you the solution to the mystery. Instead, it makes you look at the evidence and decide for yourself what the solution is, even if it’s wrong.

As scummy as they come.

The second half of The Amorous Adventures involves finding a love potion for Capon. It will lead you to the Ledetchko village, where you’ll meet or reencounter the Charlatan. If you played through the quests “Saintly Remains” and “Miracles While You Wait” in the base game, you’ll remember him. He’s a sly con man who gets you to do some dirty work for him, but the character is so entertaining and well-written that I really enjoyed his quests. When you meet him in Ledetchko, you can just buy the recipe for the potion from him for two thousand Groschen. Or... you can help him with a long con instead.

Now, unless you really liked those quests mentioned above, you probably won’t like this con-job quest at all. And depending on how you’ve been roleplaying as Henry, it might be at odds with his typical behavior. Since I didn’t play the base game as a Goody-Two-Shoes, I had no problem with doing certain things that the Charlatan asked me to do. Other players might feel differently, which is understandable. That’s probably why the quest design gives you the option to just purchase the recipe, though it’s expensive. If you do choose to help the Charlatan, however, get ready for a lot of back-and-forths, as you’ll need some very specific items to get the con right.

Caponian poetry.

Once you have the potion, you’ll go back to Capon, and the conclusion is really entertaining. For me, it was laugh-out-loud funny, which isn’t easy, but of course, that will depend on your sense of humor. It’s a bit silly, I admit, but Capon is just really well-written as the ultimate "lovable jerk." I know I can’t stand people like him in real life, but as a character in a game, he’s worth the time it takes to complete the DLC. There are also some variations in how you can complete the final quest, depending on your dialogue choices, and it’s worth replaying it to see what you missed as well.

The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon is an entertaining piece of DLC, though it can seem a bit inconsistent depending on where you start. It’s probably best to start it after the quest “Robber Baron,” which unfortunately I wasn’t able to do with my current save. I think it would make a lot more sense in the mid-game than in the endgame. Even so, I had no issues or bugs, which is surprising. I had a lot of fun with the side quests, though they are the definition of a fool’s errand. While they are mostly structured as fetch quests, there’s a lot happening in the backdrop, and fans who enjoyed the quests involving Capon and the Charlatan will definitely enjoy this DLC.
