Developed by San Diego Studio Kill Strain will be a service-based game for the PS4 community. This makes three service-based games for PlayStation along with the already released, military-strategy game Guns Up! and multiplayer third person shooter Drawn to Death expected out later this year. All the service-based games will be free to play upon release.

Kill Strain is a twin-stick top-down action shooter that pits teams of mutants against humans in this interesting MOBA styled game. Three teams (5v5v2) will fight for control of the map as a deadly force called “The Strain” threatens to overtake the environment. Integrating “dynamic team sizing” and a “turning” mechanic the teams won’t be static.

Matches will start with two teams of five humans and one team of two mutants. Humans are fighting to stop the mutants and keep The Strain at bay, while mutants are trying to spread The Strain and infect the humans. As mutants turn humans their team will grow and those that started as human players may find themselves fighting for the enemy.

Humans will be able to enhance their characters with technical advancements as the game progresses. Mutants improve their characters with biological enhancements that fit players personal play-styles. When mutants make contact with The Strain they are able to use additional, more powerful abilities to help them gain control and even out the playing field.

Kill Strain is currently in a closed beta. Nearing the game’s official launch, a wave of invite codes for a Limited Access test will be sent out to players from June 29th to July 3rd. Old beta accounts will be wiped by June 28th as the studio prepares for the new Limited Access. Interested players can sign up for the beta here.

Those that participate in the Limited Access are in for some perks. Players that  reach level 20 before July 4th will get a special in-game item called Vanguard Vincent. More information on Vanguard Vincent and the Limited Access beta have been promised to come next week.

Kill Strain will be available free to play and download on PlayStation 4 with a service based model, but the San Diego Studio claims it will never be play-to-win. You can download and play the game on July 19th on PS4 or a week earlier on July 12th if you’re a PS Plus member.
