Old School RuneScape launched for mobile today on iOS and Android platforms.

The game launched for mobile platforms, coming with cross-platform support. Players can connect their account from the PC version of Old School RuneScape and play the same character wherever you go.

Traditionally played on mouse and keyboard, controls will be a little different. Jagex said in a dev blog in August:

We want to make OS Mobile feel as much like you’d naturally expect from a mobile app as possible; sliding in a direction to rotate the camera, pinching to zoom and quick touch gestures to interact with entities or open a menu.

RuneScape is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG that features heavy grinding, large and expansive quests, and complete freedom to do whatever the player desires. The game has a couple versions. The first version, released in 2001, was shut down in August of this year.

Currently, there are two other versions: Old School RuneScape and RuneScape. The latter is the third iteration of the game with enhanced graphics, running on an HTML5 client. Old School RuneScape is the 2007 version of the game.

Both of these share the same gameplay principles and much of the same content, however, content will vary in quests, armor, skills, and more. There is also a premium membership with content that free players are gated out of.

Despite RuneScape being the modern version of its old-school counterpart, it isn't nearly as popular. At the time of this writing, there are close to 100 thousand players on Old School RuneScape. The newer game, by comparison, has peaked at around 30 thousand recently. While the new mobile release may be pushing up today's numbers, overall Old School RuneScape has been more popular for the better part of 2 years.

If you haven't played Old School RuneScape yet, or want to jump back into it, you can play it on iOS and Android devices as well as the desktop.

Quick Take

RuneScape was my first MMO and probably the first game I really got into. It taught me how to type better than any class could due to its social nature, and I played it voraciously throughout elementary school and middle school. I really want to get back into it, seeing how popular it still is. And now being able to play it anywhere? I have to give Jagex props for that.
