This past Friday, the 18th annual D.I.C.E awards, presented by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, took place in Las Vegas. The annual awards show was full of surprises and big winners, with BioWare's Dragon Age: Inquisition taking home Game of the Year.

Inquisition was nominated, and won, two awards; Game of the Year and RPG/MMO Game of the Year.

The biggest winner of the night, however, was Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, nearly sweeping the awards ceremony with eight out of nine wins, only losing to Inquisition for Game of the Year.

Shadow of Mordor was able to put away wins in several major categories, including Adventure Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, Outstanding Achievement in Story,  and Outstanding Achievement in Character for Troy Baker's performance as Talion.

Another major winner was Bungie's Destiny, taking home four awards including Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design and Action Game of the Year. Other winners included Hearthstone, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS, and Transistor.

The Academy also honored the Apple's App store, Allan Alcorn, the inventor of Pong, and the late Ralph Baer, creator of the Maganvox Odyssey, the first home gaming console and the "father of video games," the inaugural Technical Impact Award, celebrating their achievements in shaping the history of video games. Baer passed away at the age of 92 last December.

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences is a non-profit organization founded by Andrew Zucker in 1992. Since 1998, their annual awards show has been presented as part of the annual D.I.C.E summit, currently held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The D.I.C.E awards are selected by Academy members, including  publishers, developers, and members of the Independent Game Developers Association.
