NetherRealm's Ed Boon has released some details into what's coming with Injustice 2 as reported by Game Informer.

Injustice 2 will be continuing its story from where it left off at the end of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Superman is in prison following his actions in the first game, but a new threat has emerged that is making the superheroes contemplate releasing him to help them win this new battle. Ed Boon made a point of stating how much creative liberty DC has given them with their worldbuilding for the Injustice games.

Injustice 2 will feature combat similar to that of NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat X with minor changes and improvements. This will be similar to how the combat in Injustice: Gods Among Us was tweaked and modified from that of the 2011 Mortal Kombat game. Super moves (the equivalent of Mortal Kombat's "X-Ray" moves) will be returning.

Gamespot reported that Injustice 2 will be using the GGPO netcode just as Mortal Kombat X did after its netcode got updated a year after release. GGPO makes use of "rollback" to correct any errors or inconsistencies that would result from lag, and according to Gamespot it's generally well-liked by the fighting game community. GGPO's official website is down at the time of this writing due to DDOS attacks.

The most notable addition to Injustice 2 will be equipment called "Gear". Gear are pieces of equipment that you earn by leveling up your fighters. While they do offer different cosmetic appearances, gear will also affect the stats of your fighters and come in various tiers of rarity. A test session with Game Informer showed that you're likely to get more Gear for the character you're playing as but you'll also pick up pieces of Gear for other characters as well. A Tournament Mode of some sort will be included in the game, and Ed Boon cites the homebrewed competitions as motivation for players to level up their characters and acquire new Gear.

Ed Boon also took a moment to talk about their plans for DLC and guest characters in Injustice 2:

I always think there’s a novelty to it and there’s a certain amount of people who think that when they see a guest character that it took the slot of a DC character that they wanted to have," he says. "But you know, Scorpion in Injustice was the most downloaded of all the characters. There was a coolness and a novelty factor to seeing the mixing of the things. Alien and Predator in Mortal Kombat X were the most downloaded of those, so I would be surprised if we didn’t do any of that.

Injustice 2 is the sequel to 2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us. It's set for a 2017 release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

What do you think of the planned additions to Injustice 2? Do you feel the addition of gear is going to upset the balance that normally exists in fighting games or will it add more variety and longevity to the title? Let us know in the comments below!
