IMO: E3 2014 Sony - Games, Games, Games

e3 Sony

The games that Sony presented at their conference was seemingly endless. With that said, while at E3 2014 Sony showed a large volume, but none were real showstoppers. Sure, there were interesting games, but none had an incredible amount of excitement around them. Sony had a solid showing, but I can't help but feel they could have done something better - showed something more or announced something.

The first thing to say, is that I was extremely surprised to not see at least something from Driveclub. It comes out October 7, so it would make sense for them to try and hype it up a bit with a showing of the game and what to expect - that one last feature that is supposed to hook us. As it is now, without something, many people will forget about it.

There is such a large volume of games, it would be best for you to look to our recap for the quick first impressions of what they mean. Here will only hit the highlights.

The first of which is probably Entwined. When Entwined was first being shown I thought it just looked okay. It had a fun artstyle, but the gameplay didn't look all the great. However, once it was revealed that the player controls both characters on screen, like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, it captured my interest. However, that may get old quickly so I hope there is something else to go with it. As it is now, there is a reasonable concept behind it with a good looking game. Not a bad place to start really.

I have to mention the Grim Fandango Remaster. While I have not played it myself (I know, I need to, maybe I will now), I know fans have been pushing for years for a remastered/HD version. Well, here it is. It is definitely something to be happy about, and probably something that wouldn't have happened without Disney purchasing LucasArts.

No Man's Sky looked incredibly ambitions. That is definitely the word I would use to describe it. It looks great and the concept behind a complex procedurally-generated world is definitely intriguing. What they do with that is where we need to judge the game. The trailer showed some exploring and some space combat, but it is still difficult to discern what is going on exactly.

Sony's biggest part of the conference was left to Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. There is no doubt that this will be a behemoth of a release for Sony - whenever that is. The trailer they showed, which was on a PS4 and not a superpowered PC, looked absolutely stunning. Once again, Naughty Dog knows how to get the most out of a machine. Seeing the visuals, and knowing how Uncharted plays and the stories that have surrounded the franchise, I have little doubt that it may be one of the PS4's best games ever made for the console.

Sony overall did "okay." Their biggest strength was just in how many different things they showed off, but nothing particularly blew me away. Sure, Uncharted 4 looked amazing, but we saw very little beyond that. It would be unfair to say Sony chose quantity over quality, but they definitely overloaded their conference. Many of the games they showed off were some we had seen at other conferences as well, or have been in development for awhile. They could have had a much tighter conference if they had slimmed it down a bit and devoted more time to their biggest titles.

There are so many more games that Sony both showed off and announced that I urge you to go check out the rest of our articles which include the various trailers and gameplay. You will find much of that in the recap as well.
